General

  • Meeting schedule for Winter 2010

Open Lab

  • Where do we host the open-lab-software page? Where do we list the wikis we provide? How does cswiki.cs.byu.edu/facserv fit in with our department web page? What credentials are used on the cswiki.cs.byu.edu/facserv area? Should we unify all this information to a single site or at least provide links to these others areas from a single site?

Customer Service and Support

Department Services

  • External email hosting
    • Doing initial testing right now with Google using Mark's domain.
    • How do we migrate accounts
    • How about archiving, would there be a way to get student information
    • Could we get premium email to host cs.byu.edu
    • Contact someone in stats to see how they like
  • Student area to post examples of Research Area Exams, proposals, LaTeX templates, etc.
    • This should be in the normal graduate student part of the main department page
  • Server Maintenance and IT announcements: Twitter? Google Groups? Web area? Email? RSS feed? What do (should) we use?
    • We need to create a list of recognized google groups
    • We should send server maintenance requests to the faculty alias
  • Need better documentation for existing services
    • Wikis
    • Virtual Hosts
    • SVN
    • Web Server Template
  • Mozy off-site backup

We are looking very seriously to switching to google for mail service (Mark is finalizing the details), we are getting OIT to bring BYU Secure to the entire Talmage west wing through Kelly, and we have Gordon looking at having the department foot unlimited Mozy accounts for faculty for off-site backup.

Hardware Acquisition and Rotation

  • Purchase wireless access points and provide full coverage. BYU is not moving forward in this area.
    • wireless update from BYU

I believe OIT uses Cisco access points, but I'll get one of the wireless techies to contact you. What are you trying to accomplish?
If you are trying to enable the entire west wing and the department is interested in making it part of the BYUSecure zone I might
be able to find the initial funding and then get it on the ITI replacement list so you'll never have to worry about it again.
Let me know what your thinking. If you like my idea I'll eventually need some official request from Parris.

Kelly

Move forward on a migration plan.

  • Hardware for Loren
  • New blades?
